John Allen was probably Lawrence County's best-known member of the Republican Party. He was an active and staunch member of the GOP (Grand Old Party) decades before it was common and popular to be a member of that party, at least in Lawrence County and Arkansas.
Most of our county candidates for political office still run as Democrats in the primary to receive a wider voter turnout; however, voting has shown Arkansas to be a red state, voting Republican, in the most recent presidential elections.
Pictures of the Past
One of the highlights of winter in Lawrence County is the annual basketball tournament, held each year at a different school. Portia was host for the 1959 Grade School Boys and Girls tournament. In this picture, banners are hanging from the ceiling for each participating school as the Portia cheerleaders cheer on the Portia Pontiacs against the Black Rock Zebras in their boys game. The manually hand-operated scoreboard shows that Portia is ahead, 14-9, but the Zebras came back to win it, 30-27. The Egypt boys and the Portia girls were the tournament winners, and the sportsmanship cup was awarded to the Lynn School.
