The Lawrence County Tournament is underway at Hoxie with fans packing the stands as the four county school districts vie for titles in divisions from fifth grade through senior high.
As in all games, someone has to win and someone has to lose, but in Monday night's senior boys game between Hoxie and Sloan-Hendrix, excellent sportsmanship ensured that all the players went home winners.
The Greyhounds, who have been enjoying a stellar season with a 24-3 record going into the county tournament, held a healthy lead as the game was winding down.
The Sloan-Hendrix players had developed an obvious game plan, get the ball to teammate Randy Tucker and give him the opportunity to score a basket.
The surprising part happened when the opposing Hoxie Mustangs got in on the act too.
Ashley George, who covered the game for The Times Dispatch, said that as time clicked off the clock, Hoxie inbounded the ball and immediately passed to Tucker who hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Lisa Holland, a teacher at Sloan-Hendrix High School, said the students all came into school Tuesday morning bragging on Tucker and the Hoxie players for helping him out.
"I hope the Hoxie players and coach realize how much it meant to him," Holland said. "I'd say it was an excellent display of sportsmanship."
