County tourney starts Saturday
The annual Lawrence County Basketball Tournament begins Saturday at Hoxie Mustang Gymnasium in Hoxie.
Boys and girls teams from Hillcrest, Hoxie, Sloan-Hendrix and Walnut Ridge will compete for titles in fifth, sixth and seventh-grade, as well as junior high and senior high divisions.
Thirteen games are scheduled for the first day, with play beginning at 9 a.m.
The complete schedule includes:
9 a.m. - seventh-grade girls: Hoxie vs. Walnut Ridge
10 a.m. - seventh-grade boys: Hoxie vs. Hillcrest.
S-H, Hillcrest split games
Hillcrest and Sloan-Hendrix clashed in high school basketball action on Jan. 16 at Lynn.
In the senior high girls' game, Hillcrest's Lady Screamin' Eagles staged a fourth-quarter rally to edge Sloan-Hendrix 60-56.
The Lady Greyhounds led 32-25 at halftime and 46-40 entering the fourth quarter. Hillcrest outscored their visitors 20-10 in the final period to take the win.
Hoxie teams split with Highland
The Highland Rebels defeated the Hoxie Mustangs 58-38 in senior boys basketball Friday night at Hoxie.
The Rebels played a strong first half and carried a 39-20 lead into the intermission.
Gene Miller scored 12 points to lead Hoxie.
Highland won the junior boys game 58-37. Ethan Blocker had 10 points for the junior Mustangs.
The Hoxie senior girls hosted Highland on Thursday and came away with a 60-47 victory over the Lady Rebels.
WR teams fall to Pocahontas
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats traveled to Pocahontas to take on the Redskins in high school basketball action on Friday. Pocahontas came away with three victories against the Bobcat teams.
In the senior high boys game, the Redskins led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter, 26-18 at halftime and 43-26 after three periods. Walnut Ridge outscored the Skins 18-12 in the final period, but Pocahontas held on for the 55-44 victory.
Drew Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 16 points.
Pocahontas won the junior boys game 27-24.
Hillcrest falls to Ridgefield
The Ridgefield Christian Warriors defeated Hillcrest 65-49 in senior boys basketball on Jan. 17 at Jonesboro.
Dyllan Nunnally led Hillcrest with 26 points.
