Hoxie, WR teams split games
The Hoxie Mustangs and Walnut Ridge Bobcats squared off in high school basketball action on Jan. 9 and 10 at Walnut Ridge's Sharum Gymnasium.
On. Jan. 10, Hoxie's Sydney Gillham and Kaitlin Henson each posted double-doubles as the Lady Mustangs routed the host Lady Bobcats 61-19.
Hoxie raced out to a big early lead and the Lady Bobcats never recovered. Hoxie led 23-6 at the end of the first quarter, 37-13 at halftime and 53-19 after three periods.
Gillham finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Henson added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Devyn Pollard also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Megan Jared scored 13 points to lead Walnut Ridge.
The junior Lady Mustangs started the evening by defeating Walnut Ridge 41-14 to run their record to 13-2 on the season.
The boys teams met on Jan. 9 with Walnut Ridge taking the senior high game 61-32.
The Bobcats led 15-5 after one quarter, but exploded for 28 points in the second period and held Hoxie to four points to stretch their advantage to 43-9 at halftime. Walnut Ridge led 50-32 after three quarters.
Brighton Brand scored 14 points, and Luke Harper added 12 for Walnut Ridge.
Chance Moore led Hoxie with 11 points.
Walnut Ridge won the junior high game 57-44.
The Bobcats led 11-7 after one quarter, 25-16 at halftime and 31-23 heading into the final period.
Nash Gill scored 23 points, and Cole Manning had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Walnut Ridge.
Ethan Blocker led Hoxie with 13 points, while Tracer Keeling and Mason Woodoard added 12 points apiece.
In the seventh-grade game, Joseph Clayton and Jayden Hollister each had 10 points to lead Walnut Ridge to a 30-22 win.
Cade Forrester led Hoxie with 15 points.
