Hoxie sets 2017 budget,
some rates increase

Megan Heyl
Staff Writer

The city of Hoxie set its budget for all city accounts at a total of $1,928,330 for 2017. The budget was approved at the Jan. 10 meeting.

The new budget reflects two increases the council also passed at the meeting. The first of which is a $1 increase on garbage collection rates on residential units, a needed increase to match higher fees the city is required to pay.

Pickup is now set at $9 a month for residences and range from $17 to $232 for businesses determined based on amount of garbage generated and type of receptacle used.

Additionally, in order to increase mosquito control and have two sprayers working simultaneously, a monthly charge of $1.50, up from 75 cents, will be assessed to each residence or place of business. Mayor Lanny Tinker said they used two sprayers at the end of last season and it helped keep down the mosquito population.

Tinker said the budget was a realistic representation of what he expects the city will spend based on actual figures from 2016. He added that maintenance expenditures are the hardest to predict and will be watched closely.

He also added that a new grain bed truck is needed and while some has been budgeted toward its purchase, it is not enough to cover the cost completely and he would bring it back to the council at a future meeting.

Also at the meeting:

Tinker gave an update on some water main breaks caused by changing temperatures and heavy rains. He said that it has caused some delays in other city jobs, such as taking down the Christmas decorations.

the council was updated on the status of the city's job stimulus loans. Tinker said all but one are current on their payment.

2017 committees were announced. William "Butch" Watkins has been appointed to the Planning & Zoning Committee. Terrell Downing was reappointed to the Re-Use Committee. Council member appointments are as follows: Sherry Moore, Larry Couch, Police/Fire Committee; Jerry Decker, Kerrie Hancock, Street/Sanitation; and Becky Linebaugh, Tim Taylor, Water/Sewer Committee.
