Hillcrest, Hoxie earn
|The Hoxie Lady Mustangs won the championship of the Mustang Classic. The Lady Mustangs defeated Poplar Bluff 57-52 in the finals on Thursday to earn the title. The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles and Hoxie Lady Mustangs won championships at the Mustang Classic basketball tournament held last week at Hoxie.
Sydney Gillham scored 23 points to lead the Lady Mustangs past Poplar Bluff 57-52 in the girls title game. Kaitlin Henson and Emily Davis each added 12 points for Hoxie.
In other girls action on Thursday, McCrory slipped past Gosnell 63-59 to capture third place.
The Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles routed Palestine-Wheatley 72-31.
Mickayla Smith finished with 28 points and four steals to lead the Lady Eagles. Carly Otwell recorded 13 points, seven assists and six steals. Mollie Morgan contributed 13 points and five assists. Samantha Tacker scored 11 points, and Paige Penn added seven points.
Maynard defeated Midland 56-33.
Hillcrest defeated Piggott 60-44 in the boys final. Dyllan Nunnally led the Screamin' Eagles with 20 points, while Tyson Durham added 15.
Palestine-Wheatley claimed third place by routing Maynard 78-39.
Midland defeated Hoxie 73-48. Chance Moore had 24 points for Hoxie. Newport defeated McCrory 60-41.
Gillham had 40 points as Hoxie defeated Gosnell 87-29 in a girls semifinal game.
The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 27-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 54-22 at halftime. Henson scored 16 points, and Devyn Pollard added 13 for Hoxie.
Maynard's Lady Tigers held off a furious Hillcrest rally and defeated the Lady Eagles 68-60 in a girls consolation game.
Maynard led 18-11 after one quarter, 33-22 at halftime and 55-32 entering the fourth period. The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the final quarter to push the lead to 58-32 with six minutes to play. Hillcrest then went on a 28-10 run to finish the game.
Penn had 17 points and seven rebounds, and Otwell chipped in 14 points. Morgan finished with 10 points and five steals. Tacker added seven points, and Smith had six points and four steals.
The Poplar Bluff Lady Mules advanced to the finals with a 69-35 win over McCrory.
Midland defeated Palestine-Wheatley 51-33.
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles outlasted Palestine-Wheatley 67-62 in overtime to earn a spot in Thursday's finals.
Nunnally and Durham each scored 23 points for Hillcrest.
Piggott defeated Maynard 53-32 in the other boys semifinal contest.
In consolation action, Newport defeated Hoxie 63-46, and McCrory downed Midland 77-51.
Devyn Pollard scored 19 points, and Gillham added 18 as the Hoxie Lady Mustangs earned a 65-23 win over Palestine-Wheatley in first-round action on Dec. 27.
Poplar Bluff advanced in the winner's bracket with a 72-40 win over Hillcrest.
The Lady Mules held a 29-14 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 45-19 at the intermission.
Tacker hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points. Penn added nine points and eight rebounds.
The McCrory Lady Jaguars defeated Maynard 67-66, and Gosnell routed Midland 51-26.
Hillcrest edged Newport 50-47 behind Nunnally's 22 points.
Palestine-Wheatley defeated the host Hoxie Mustangs.
Piggott defeated Midland 69-54, and Maynard defeated McCroy 53-40.
