Blaine Elizabeth Rorex

Kai and Amy Rorex of Walnut Ridge have announced the birth of their first child, a daughter, born Dec. 20, 2016, at St. Bernard's Birthcare Center in Jonesboro.

The baby weighed six pounds, 10 ounces, and has been named Blaine Elizabeth Rorex.

Grandparents are Jeff King of Hoxie, Debbie King, John Jr. and Melody Fender, all of Walnut Ridge, and Bo and Shawn Rorex of Swifton.

Gary Allen

Gary Bruce Allen, 74, of Walnut Ridge, died Jan. 2, 2017, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center.

Born Dec. 23, 1942, in Saffell, he was a beautician, welder and sawmill operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce L. and Bertha Sanders Allen.

Survivors include a son, Greg Allen, Emmet; a daughter, Carrie Woodall, Benton; a brother, Larry Allen and wife Rebecca, Saffell; two sisters, Sheila Whitlow and husband Paul, Saffell, and Regina Ryan and husband Terry, Walnut Ridge; and four grandchildren.

Graveside service was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Lincoln Ward Cemetery near Strawberry under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home.

Kelly Don Austin

Kelly Don Austin, 57, of Jonesboro, formerly of Walnut Ridge, died Jan. 1, 2017, at his home.

Born Sept. 20, 1959, in Walnut Ridge, he worked for Harrison Food Company as a regional sales manager for many years. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Jonesboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie Spears Austin, whom he married March 25, 1984, in Jonesboro; and his father, Donald "Pookie" Austin.

Survivors include his mother, Oma Lee Austin, Walnut Ridge; two sisters, Janet Lawhon and husband Gary, Walnut Ridge, and Lorra Whitmire and husband Chris, Clover Bend; five nephews, Austin Lawhon and wife Morgan, Brian Gibbs, Chad Spears, Nathaniel Spears and Jeremy Spears; five nieces, ShayLee Junkersfeld and husband Brad, Chantelle Spears, Raylene Whitmire, Amy Elrod and Britt Kincaid; two great-nephews, Bentley Lawhon and Clayton Lawhon; several other great nephews and nieces; many friends and family; and his beloved fur babies, Snoop and Conrad.

Visitation is today from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home. Funeral will follow at 1 p.m. with Glenn Smith and Jim Hillyer officiating. Burial will be in Nettleton Cemetery at Jonesboro.

Pallbearers will be Danny Whitmire, Dean Gibson, Steve Shrable, Jeff Brecklein, Jim Brecklein, Chad Spears, Brian Gibbs, Bill Wilcoxson and Kevin Slayton.

Myron Brown

Myron "Brownie" Brown, 69, of Smithville, died Dec. 29, 2016.

Born Jan. 13, 1946, at Newport he was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Brown; his parents, George and Rosie Boone Brown; a brother, Kenneth "Buck" Brown; and a sister, Mary Roach.

Survivors include three sons, George Brown and wife Rachel, Jacksonport, Wayne Brown and wife Heidi, Smithville, and Marvin Brown and wife Paige, Newark; a daughter, Geneva Hall and husband Scott, Rye, Colo.; two brothers, Ronald Brown, Smithville, and Edward Brown, Strawberry; four sisters, Ethel Barner, Tuckerman, Betty Shelly and Connie Prince, both of Newport, and Kitty Jewel, Algoa; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Sunday at 2 p.m. at Qualls Funeral Home in Cave City. Burial was in Lancaster Cemetery at Strawberry.

Pallbearers were Wayne Brown, Marvin Brown, George Brown, John Blazer, Marcus Hembrey and Jeff Manuel. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Shelly, Ronald Brown, David Manuel and Jeffy Broyles.

Billy Caldwell

William Vance "Billy" Caldwell, 58, of Hoxie, died Dec. 31, 2016, in Jonesboro.

Born Dec. 16, 1958, in Walnut Ridge, he spent most of his life in Lawrence County. He worked at Vulcan for several years and attended United Free Will Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David "Sonny" and Wanda Andrews Murphy Caldwell.

Survivors include his wife, Lesa Townsley Caldwell; two daughters, Holly Caldwell Thielemier and husband Jeremy, and Erica Anglin and husband Rick; two sons, Derick Caldwell and wife Candi, Mountain View, and Daniel Caldwell and wife Erica, Cabot; a stepson, Jeremy McGinniss and wife Hannah, Jonesboro; a brother, Chuck Caldwell, Smithville; two half-brothers, Shay Caldwell, Rogers, and Tracey Murphy, Jonesboro; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral is Thursday at 1 p.m. at United Free Will Baptist Church in Walnut Ridge with Glenn Smith officiating. Burial will be in Oak Forest Cemetery at Black Rock under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home.

Visitation is Thursday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

Dena Hudson

Dena Renee Hudson, 47, of Walnut Ridge, died Jan. 2, 2017, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born Jan. 29, 1969, in Walnut Ridge, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mazie Adams Hudson.

Survivors include her husband, James Chambers; two daughters, Tristina Bailey and husband Brandon, Swifton, and Marilyn Brown and husband Dale, Walnut Ridge; a son, Sammy Chambers, Bono; seven sisters, Gwen Hudson, Wichita, Kan., Tammy Minchue, Judy Brannen and Amanda Chaires, all of Jacksonville, Lori Lacy, Iuka, Ill., Nyoka Polston, Alicia, and Christy Chaires, McRae; eight-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and great-nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Home.

Tammy Jones

Tammy Rena Jones, 51, of Walnut Ridge, died Dec. 21, 2016, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 12, 1965, in Walnut Ridge, she was an administrative assistant at the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office. She had previously worked at the Lawrence County Clerk's office and as a teacher's aide at Walnut Ridge High School. She was president of the Lawrence County 4-H Foundation and Shutterbug Volunteer Leader. She was a member of Highway 67 Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rupert Frank and Bertia Alzora Madison Hembrey; a sister, Donna Moore; a brother-in-law, Jerry Moore; and two nephews.

Survivors include her husband, Julian Timothy "Tim" Jones, whom she married May 22, 1987; a daughter, Cassie Lawson and husband Ross, Ravenden; a son, Alex Jones, of the home; two brothers, Joe Hembrey and wife Sandra, Kemp, Texas, and Eddie Hembrey and wife Linda, Walnut Ridge; and a sister, Lana Foley, Jonesboro.

Funeral was Saturday at 10 a.m. at Cox Funeral Home with Roger Knight and Richard Knight officiating. Burial was in Strangers Home Cemetery near Alicia.

Pallbearers were Joseph Hembrey, Jason Hembrey, Aaron Richey, Jay Jones, Shane Barnes and Justin Barnes.

Allison Meeker

Allison Meeker, 19, of Charleston, Ill., died Dec. 25, following an illness.

A student at Williams Baptist College, she was formerly of Newton, Ill., and Piggott.

Survivors include her parents, Matt and Kathy (Carr) Meeker, a brother, Darren Meeker and wife Rebecca, Kansas City, Mo.; grandparents, Tom "Henry" and Vera Carr of Charleston, Ill.; her beloved dog, Bruiser; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were Dec. 30 at Barkley Funeral Home in Greenup, Ill. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Lyndell Janett Meeks

Lyndell Janett "Tooter" Meeks, 68, of Pocahontas, formerly of Black Rock, died Jan. 2, 2017, at St. Bernards in Jonesboro.

Born Dec. 28, 1948, in Swifton, she was a homemaker and was of the Southern Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Iva Smith Ethridge; and a brother, Mickey Ethridge.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Meeks, whom she married Aug. 20, 1966, at Imboden; two sons, Bobby Foster, Delaplaine, and Gerald Meeks and wife Leishi, Black Rock; her father, Adrin Lynell Ethridge, Alicia; a sister, Sharon Stonam and husband David, St. Augustine, Texas; and a grandson, Hunter Cecil Hawkins Meeks.

Graveside service is Thursday at 2 p.m. at Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock with Blake Shaw officiating. Cox Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Meeks, Chester Shannon, Rick Meeks, Gary Meeks, Herschel Meeks and Frankie Meeks. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Chastain, Kenneth Meeks, Narvel Phillips, Charles Meeks, Rusty Meeks and Dustin Meeks.

Virginia A. Stell

Virginia A. McMillon Stell, 91, of Belleville, Ill., died Dec. 26, 2016, at Cedar Ridge Health Care Center in Lebanon, Ill.

Born May 17, 1925, in Hoxie, she was the daughter of Joe and Rose Garner McMillon. She worked at Scoville's Restaurant, Loisel Village lunch counter and S.S. Kresge lunch counter in East St. Louis, Ill. She was a foster parent for Illinois Family and Children's Services through the years while raising her daughter and stepchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Stell; a brother, Alfred; and three sisters, Lillian Hilburn, Mildred Hester and Juanita Gilmore.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosemary Gruber and husband Daniel, Belleville, Ill.; three granddaughters, Karen Schwoebel, Nancy Beaty and Lynn Stover; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Lawrence Memorial Park. Local arrangements were under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Sammie Glenn Vance

Sammie Glenn Vance, 63, of Sedgwick, died Dec. 21, 2016, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Feb. 7, 1953, in Jonesboro, he was the son of the late Glennwood "Peck" and Charlotte Le Mew Vance.

He will be remembered as a loving brother and uncle. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as having fun with friends.

Survivors include a sister, Jean Craft and husband Rohn; two nephews, Drew and Rebekah Craft, and Jesse Craft; and great nieces and nephews, Cora, Sutton and Boston Craft, all of Jonesboro.

Graveside service was Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Jonesboro Memorial Park with longtime friend Dennis Truxler officiating. Gregg Langford Bookout Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Sedgwick United Methodist Church or the NEA Humane Society.

Wandon Wilson

Wandon Wilson, 90, of Calamine, died Dec. 27, 2016.

Born March 29, 1926, at Charlotte, he was the son of James Albert and Nannie Josephine Clem Wilson. He was a retired welder for International Harvester in East Moline, Ill., and a member of the Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church in Nelsonville. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James L. Wilson and Shelby Gene Wilson; and two sisters, Juanita Hoggard and Vera Mae Hoggard.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jackie Jones Wilson; a son, Tony Jones, Searcy; two daughters, Pamela Wilson and Angela Russell, both of Calamine; two brothers, Bob Wilson and Denver Wilson, both of Calamine; three sisters, Donna LeMaster and Jan McCollum, both of Cave City, and Lanell Hoggard, Kansas; five grandchildren, Kristina Jones Halfacre, Jacquelyne Jones, Nicholas Burtenshaw, Joshua Burtenshaw and Eric Burtenshaw; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral is Friday at 2 p.m. at Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church at Nelsonville with Bro. Phillip Lewallen officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.

Pallbearers will be Randy Smith, Jeff Huskey, Zack Baxter, Allen Jones, Gary Farmer and Randall Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Wilson, Denver Wilson, Bob McCollum, Jim LeMaster, W.G. "Junior" Jones, Bart Hoggard, Leon Hoggard and L.D. Hoggard.

Visitation is Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
