Local teams compete in tourney
Three teams from Lawrence County played second-round games in the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Basketball Tournament last week in Jonesboro.
On Thursday, the fourth-seed Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds fell to fifth-seeded Izard County Consolidated 70-65 in Division I boys play.
Sloan-Hendrix led 18-17 at the end of the first quarter. After a back-and-forth second period, ICC took a 37-33 advantage into halftime.
The Cougars opened a double-digit lead late in the third quarter, but a late run by Sloan-Hendrix cut the gap to 50-45 at the end of the period. The Greyhounds took the lead at 57-54, but ICC went on a 10-1 run to regain the lead for good.
Tyler Murphy led Sloan-Hendrix with 22 points. Hunter Stallings scored 14 points, and Ben Meigs added 12 for the Greyhounds, who dropped to 19-3 with the loss.
Also on Thursday, the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats were eliminated from the Division I girls tournament with a 65-26 loss to the Riverside Lady Rebels.
Riverside led by just one point, 15-14, at the end of the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Cats 19-3 in the second period to increase the lead to 34-17 at the intermission. The Lady Rebels continued to dominate in the second half, stretching the advantage to 53-22 entering the fourth quarter.
Megan Jared led Walnut Ridge with 13 points.
Also in Division I girls play, the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds fell to Izard County Consolidated 54-40 on Dec. 21.
Sloan-Hendrix got off to a good start and was within three points, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Cougars took command in the second period, outscoring the Lady Hounds 20-4 to stretch the lead to 34-15 at halftime. ICC continued to lead 46-28 at the end of the third quarter and held off the Lady Greyhounds in the final period.
Annie Doney scored 13 points to lead Sloan-Hendrix.
