S-H teams advance in tourney
The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys and senior girls basketball teams each won their first-round games in the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament on Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
The seventh-seeded Lady Greyhounds held off a late charge by 10th-seeded East Poinsett County to down the Lady Warriors 51-47.
Sloan-Hendrix led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at the intermission. EPC battled throughout the second half and cut the Lady Hounds' lead to two points with four minutes left. The Lady Warriors closed to within one point on two occasions with less than two minutes to play.
Annie Doney and Abbey Vance each turned in big performances to help the Lady Greyhounds. Doney had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Vance finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lady Greyhounds are scheduled to play second-seeded Izard County Consolidated today at 1:30 p.m. in the Division I Girls tournament.
The fourth-seeded Sloan-Hendrix senior boys had an easier time advancing, defeating 13th-seeded Ridgefield Christian 82-54.
The game was close early, with the Greyhounds leading only 18-16 at the end of the first quarter and 38-31 at halftime. Sloan-Hendrix broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Ridgefield 26-11 to push the lead to 64-42 heading into the final period. The Greyhounds continued to pull away in the fourth quarter.
Ben Meigs scored 17 points to lead Sloan-Hendrix. Colby Johnson had 13 points, three assists and four steals. Tyler Murphy had 11 points, and Hunter Stallings added seven points and 15 rebounds.
Sloan-Hendrix advances to play fifth-seeded Izard County Consolidated on Thursday at 4:30. p.m.
Sloan-Hendrix won a 73-71 barnburner over Crowley's Ridge Academy in senior boys action on Thursday at Imboden.
The Greyhounds led 21-17 after one quarter and 38-35 at halftime. CRA surged ahead in the third quarter, 57-50, but Sloan-Hendrix regrouped in the fourth period to outscore the Falcons 23-14 and take the win.
Johnson led the Greyhounds with 20 points and three steals. Murphy had 10 points and three assists, while Jacob Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds. Stallings had eight rebounds and three assists.
The Sloan-Hendrix junior boys dominated the second and third quarters en route to edging CRA 62-56.
The junior Falcons led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Sloan-Hendrix came back to take a 29-27 lead into the intermission. The junior Hounds stretched the lead to 54-39 after three periods and held off a fourth-quarter rally by CRA.
Garrett Reese scored 19 points, and Fischer Miller had 10 points and seven rebounds for the junior Greyhounds.
CRA won a seventh-grade boys game 28-4.
