S-H teams advance in tourney
The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys and senior girls basketball teams each won their first-round games in the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament on Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
The seventh-seeded Lady Greyhounds held off a late charge by 10th-seeded East Poinsett County to down the Lady Warriors 51-47.
Sloan-Hendrix led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at the intermission. EPC battled throughout the second half and cut the Lady Hounds' lead to two points with four minutes left. The Lady Warriors closed to within one point on two occasions with less than two minutes to play.
Annie Doney and Abbey Vance each turned in big performances to help the Lady Greyhounds. Doney had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Vance finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Lady Cats advance in NEA
Megan Jared raced the length of the court and hit a jump shot from the right baseline to lift the 12th-seeded Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats to a 33-32 upset win over the fifth-seeded Tuckerman Lady Bulldogs in the first round of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament on Monday afternoon in Jonesboro.
The game was close throughout, with Walnut Ridge leading 5-3 at the end of the first quarter and 15-9 at halftime. Tuckerman heated up from the outside in the second half and moved into a 26-24 lead after three quarters.
The teams traded the lead back-and-forth during the final period. Jodyn Lane hit a pair of free throws to put Tuckerman ahead with one minute to play. The Lady Bulldogs had a chance to extend their lead, but went 0-for-5 at the line in the final minute.
Screamin' Eagles beat Midland
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles defeated the Midland Mustangs 63-57 in senior boys basketball Dec. 12 at Lynn.
The teams entered the fourth quarter tied 42-42 before the Eagles were able to pull away for the win.
Tyson Durham scored 20 points, and Dyllan Nunnally added 17 for Hillcrest.
The Hillcrest junior boys defeated Midland 50-22.
Midland's Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Screamin' Eagles 71-58.
Lady Mustangs beat Cave City
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated Cave City 59-34 in senior girls basketball Friday night at Cave City.
Hoxie led 19-8 after the first quarter, 26-12 at halftime and 39-19 at the end of the third period.
Sydney Gillham led the Lady Mustangs with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Devyn Pollard had 11 points, and Emily Davis finished with 10 points.
The Lady Mustangs improved to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
Hoxie’s Jaedyn Brown scored 35 points as the junior Lady Mustangs defeated Cave City 45-32.
S-H sweeps Hillcrest
Sloan-Hendrix hosted Hillcrest in high school basketball action on Dec. 13 at Imboden.
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds improved to 15-2 with an 87-64 win over the Hillcrest senior boys.
The Screamin' Eagles jumped out to a 19-15 first-quarter lead, but the Greyhounds came back in the second period to move into a 36-34 lead at the intermission. Sloan-Hendrix increased the lead to 63-50 after three quarters and continued to pull away in the final period, outscoring Hillcrest 24-14, to cement the victory.
