Walnut Ridge defeats Hoxie
in rekindled rivalry
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats and Hoxie Mustangs rekindled their longstanding rivalry on the gridiron Thursday night at Hoxie's Crider Field.
Luke Harper rushed for 280 yards and Colin Phillips scored three touchdowns to lead Walnut Ridge to a 44-0 victory. The win also secured a spot in the 3A state football playoffs for the Bobcats.
Harper scored Walnut Ridge's first points on a 76-yard run with 8:26 to play in the first quarter. The conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the Bobcats with a 6-0 lead.
Later in the period Harper broke free for a 49-yard run, but was tackled short of the goal line. Phillips finished the drive with a four-yard run at the 5:11 mark. Hoxie again stopped the conversion, keeping the score 12-0.
S-H boys off to good start
The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys basketball team defeated the Cotter Warriors 79-62 in a battle of unbeaten teams Friday at Imboden.
The Greyhounds trailed 20-18 after one quarter, but surged back in the second period to take a 43-37 lead into halftime. Sloan-Hendrix continued to lead after three quarters, 55-48, and outscored the Warriors 24-14 in the final period to pull away for the victory.
Tyler Murphy led the Greyhounds with 28 points and nine rebounds. Colby Johnson had 15 points, and Jordan Dail added 12. Ben Meigs contributed 10 points and four assists.
Hillcrest drops games to Calico Rock
Calico Rock's Lady Pirates slipped past the Hillcrest Lady Screamin' Eagles 67-64 in 1A-2 North senior girls basketball action Thursday at Strawberry.
Hillcrest led 27-22 at halftime and 48-46 after three quarters, but couldn't hold off the Lady Pirates in the final period.
Carly Otwell led Hillcrest with 29 points.
The Calico Rock senior boys defeated Hillcrest 48-43.
The Hillcrest senior girls dropped a 65-54 contest to the Mammoth Spring Lady Bears on Nov. 1 at Mammoth Spring.
