The Walnut Ridge Bobcats jumped out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat the Corning Bobcats 42-0 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Sexton Field.

Colin Phillips broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run to give Walnut Ridge a 6-0 lead with 11:02 remaining in the first quarter. Will Weir tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Michael Bounds on Walnut Ridge's next possession. Phillips ran for the conversion to put hometown Bobcats ahead 14-0.

With 4:53 to play in the opening quarter, Weir showed off his defensive skills by picking off a Corning pass and returning for a touchdown. Weir then passed to Slade Dalton for the conversion and a 22-0 Walnut Ridge advantage.

After a scoreless second quarter, Walnut Ridge put the contest out of reach with a pair of scores in the third.

First, Luke Harper scored on a three-yard run, and Phillips added the conversion to push the lead to 30-0 at the 8:37 mark of the third. Weir connected with Bounds again, this time for a 49-yard score and the lead grew to 36-0 with 5:31 left in the third quarter.

Walnut Ridge added a touchdown when Harper busted loose for a 55-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. The conversion attempt was no good, leaving the score at 42-0.

Weir was a perfect four-of-four passing, for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Harper had another strong game running the ball, finishing with 148 yards on 12 carries. Phillips had 77 yards on nine attempts. Cade Burris added five yards on three carries, and Weir contributed four yards on two carries.

Bounds had two receptions for 67 yards. Dalton and Burris each had one catch for 13 and nine yards, respectively.

Walnut Ridge improved to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Bobcats take on the Hoxie Mustangs in the regular-season finale. The game takes place Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Hoxie's Crider Field.

Extra parking and an extra admission gate will be opened up Thursday night for the game. Hoxie Coach Tom Sears says parking at the baseball field and by the Mustang Gym will be open and available. The lights will be on at the baseball field to provide for secure parking. The second admission gate will be located behind the Hoxie home seating.
