WR wins battle of the Cats
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats jumped out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead and went on to defeat the Corning Bobcats 42-0 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Sexton Field.
Colin Phillips broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run to give Walnut Ridge a 6-0 lead with 11:02 remaining in the first quarter. Will Weir tossed an 18-yard touchdown to Michael Bounds on Walnut Ridge's next possession. Phillips ran for the conversion to put hometown Bobcats ahead 14-0.
With 4:53 to play in the opening quarter, Weir showed off his defensive skills by picking off a Corning pass and returning for a touchdown. Weir then passed to Slade Dalton for the conversion and a 22-0 Walnut Ridge advantage.
Mustangs drop game to Piggott
Piggott used a balanced offense and a stingy defense to hand the Hoxie Mustangs a 48-0 defeat in senior high football action Friday night at Piggott.
The Mohawks led 7-0 after the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by John Jones.
Piggott put the game out of reach with 28 points in the second quarter. Cade Harrell scored from eight yards out to stretch the Mohawks' lead to 15-0 following the conversion.
Hoxie advances to state semifinals
The Hoxie Lady Mustang volleyball team enjoyed another stellar season on the court in 2016. Like last season, however, the season came to an end with a loss to the Paris Lady Eagles in the semifinals of the 3A State Tournament.
Paris, who hosted the tournament, defeated the Lady Mustangs in three sets, 25-10, 25-17, 25-14, on Thursday afternoon.
Hoxie ended the season with a 23-4 record.
Screamin' Eagles defeat Ridgefield
The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles defeated Ridgefield Christian 46-42 in senior boys basketball in front of a homecoming crowd at Strawberry on Friday night.
The Eagles led 21-19 at halftime, but Ridgefield fought back in the third quarter to grab a 32-29 advantage heading into the final period. Hillcrest outscored the Warriors 17-10 in the fourth quarter to take the win.
Dyllan Nunnally led Hillcrest with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Tyson Durham had 15 points and seven rebounds.
S-H sweeps Mammoth
The Sloan-Hendrix senior Greyhound basketball team earned its third win of the season with a 79-64 victory over Mammoth Spring on Friday at Imboden.
The Greyhounds took charge early, bolting out to a 22-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Mammoth Spring fought back and cut the lead to 34-27 by halftime. Sloan-Hendrix took a 56-48 advantage into the fourth quarter and held off the Bears in the final period.
Colby Johnson led the Hounds with 30 points and five assists. Hunter Stallings added 21 points, and Tyler Murphy contributed nine points, seven assists and six rebounds.
