Mustangs defeat Corning, 42-28
Chandler Spradlin accounted for four touchdowns and Diamani Davis ran for two scores as the Hoxie Mustangs defeated the Corning Bobcats 42-28 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Corning.
Davis scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter to give Hoxie a 6-0 lead. The Bobcats' tied the game on a short run later in the period.
The game appeared to be headed to halftime deadlocked when Spradlin found Colton Robins with a 62-yard pass with just 14 seconds remaining in the half. Spradlin ran for the conversion to put the Mustangs in front 14-6 at the intermission.
Hoxie expanded its lead in the third quarter when Spradlin hooked up with Chase Moore on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Ty Woodard's PAT gave Hoxie a 21-6 advantage.
Gordo Gonzalez scored on a 33-yard run for Corning later in the period, and the extra point brought the Bobcats to within 21-13.
Davis found the end zone for the second time on a four-yard run late in the third quarter. Woodard's extra point made the score 28-13 in the Mustangs' favor.
The teams traded scores in the fourth quarter. Corning struck first on Gonzalez' 10-yard run and ensuing conversion, which closed the gap to 28-21.
Hoxie responded on Spradlin's 48-yard pass to Chance Moore to stretch the Mustangs' lead to 34-21 with 9:14 to play. Spradlin then put the game out of reach with a 13-yard keeper with 2:35 to play. He also ran for the conversion to set Hoxie's lead at 42-21.
Gonzalez added a 35-yard run in the game's final minute. The extra point set the final score.
The victory boosted the Mustangs' record to 2-3 in conference play and 2-6 overall. Hoxie travels to Piggott on Friday night for a conference matchup with the Mohawks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Spradlin's final numbers included 167 yards on 4/7 passing. He rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries.
Davis added 100 rushing yards on 21 carries, and Robins finished with 17 yards on two attempts.
Robins was Hoxie's leading receiver, with two catches for 96 yards. Chance Moore and Chase Moore each had one reception for 48 and 23 yards, respectively.
The Mustangs' defense was led by Nick Parker, who had 11 tackles, and Gunner Moore, who contributed 10 tackles. Robins, Woodard and Davis each registered seven tackles, and Davis also recovered a fumble. Caleb Littlejohn had six tackles, a sack and two tackles for loss.
