Mustangs defeat Corning, 42-28
Chandler Spradlin accounted for four touchdowns and Diamani Davis ran for two scores as the Hoxie Mustangs defeated the Corning Bobcats 42-28 in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Corning.
Davis scored on a three-yard run in the first quarter to give Hoxie a 6-0 lead. The Bobcats' tied the game on a short run later in the period.
The game appeared to be headed to halftime deadlocked when Spradlin found Colton Robins with a 62-yard pass with just 14 seconds remaining in the half. Spradlin ran for the conversion to put the Mustangs in front 14-6 at the intermission.
Bobcats slide past Piggott, 14-13
Walnut Ridge stopped a two-point conversion attempt by Piggott with three minutes to play, enabling the Bobcats to come away with a 14-13 victory over the Mohawks in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Sexton Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Piggott opened the scoring on a 15-yard run by Trey Gossett in the second period. The PAT gave the Mohawks a 7-0 lead.
Walnut Ridge responded on their ensuing possession with a downfield march that was capped by Will Weir's 22-yard touchdown pass to Michael Bounds. Weir then passed to Bounds for the conversion, giving the Bobcats an 8-7 lead.
Teams advance to state
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs and Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats squared off in the semifinals of the 3A Northeast Conference Tournament on Oct. 17 in Paragould.
The Lady Mustangs, who won the conference's regular-season championship, bested the Lady Bobcats in three sets, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13. Hoxie went on to defeat Crowley's Ridge Academy in the finals on Oct. 18.
For Hoxie, Katelyn Jamison had four digs, an assist and was 3/3 serving. Kelsey Moody had 23 assists, a dig, three kills and was 15/16 serving, with four aces. Kayla Roberts had three digs, 16 kills, two blocks and was 5/6 serving, with two aces. Christin Barker had nine digs and was 15/17 serving, with four aces. Sydney Gillham had 13 digs, nine kills and was 20/21 serving, with an ace. Ellie Britt had a dig and three blocks, and Emily Davis had seven assists, four digs, three kills and was 10/10 serving.
Hoxie ladies are champions
The Hoxie senior high volleyball team backed up its 3A Northeast regular season conference title by winning the conference tournament last week in Paragould. The Lady Mustangs defeated the host team, the Crowley's Ridge Lady Falcons in four sets on Oct. 18 to claim the championship.
Hoxie advanced to the 3A State Tournament, which takes place this week at Paris High School. The Lady Mustangs received a bye in the first round and were scheduled to take to the court yesterday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Monday's Green Forest-Mansfield match.
Greyhounds beat Tuckerman
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds withstood a second-half rally by Tuckerman and held on to defeat the Bulldogs 71-67 in senior high basketball Friday night at Imboden.
The Greyhounds led 14-8 after one quarter and stretched the lead to 41-23 at halftime. Tuckerman outscored the Hounds 21-11 in the third period to close to within 52-44. The Bulldogs continued their comeback in the fourth quarter, but Sloan-Hendrix was able to hang on for the four-point victory.
