Outstanding rushing not enough
as Mustangs fall to Rivercrest

Chandler Spradlin and Diamani Davis combined for over 300 yards rushing for the Hoxie Mustangs, but it wasn't enough to offset a five-touchdown performance by Rivercrest's Kentavious Robinson, as the Colts downed the Mustangs 54-27 in 3A-3 football action Friday night at Crider Field.

The Colts scored on Robinson's 16-yard run, followed by the PAT, with 7:58 to play in the first quarter to grab an early 7-0 lead.

Hoxie answered on quarterback Chandler Spradlin's 10-yard keeper at the 2:28 mark of the period. Ty Woodard's extra point tied the game at 7-7.

Rivercrest regained the lead on Jamyka Frank's 27-yard run late in the opening quarter, and extended their lead to 21-7 on Robinson's five-yard run early in the second quarter.

Spradlin brought the Mustangs closer with his one-yard run with 6:34 remaining in the half. Woodard's PAT brought Hoxie to within 21-14.

The Colts then reeled off 20 unanswered points on a pair of runs by Robinson in the second period and a 12-yard pass from Kesler Pierce to Franks early in the third quarter to move out to a 41-14.

The Mustangs refused to go away, as Chase Moore hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from Spradlin at the 7:22 mark of the third period. Woodard's extra point made the score 41-21 in the Colts' favor.

Robinson scored his fifth touchdown of the evening on a 38-yard run to push the Rivercrest's lead to 48-21 entering the fourth quarter.

After a Rivercrest touchdown made the score 54-21, Davis scored Hoxie's final points on a five-yard run with 5:21 to play in the game.

Davis finished with 173 rushing yards on 27 carries, while Spradlin totaled 139 yards on 23 attempts. Carson Spargo had one carry for 10 yards.

Spradlin completed nine-of-14 passes, for 95 yards.

Chase Moore had three receptions for 58 yardsw, and Kiefer Wilson added three catches for 20 yards. Chance Moore caught two passes for 10 yards, and Colton Robins had one catch for seven yards.

Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Chase Moore with 11 tackles. Wilson had seven tackles, and Davis made six tackles.

The loss dropped Hoxie to 0-3 in the conference and 0-6 overall. The Mustangs are home again this week, hosting the Osceola Seminoles at Crider Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
