Bobcats fall to Newport
Newport used a strong ground game and a stingy defense to hand the Walnut Ridge Bobcats their first loss of the season Friday night. The Greyhounds rushed for 344 yards in handing the Bobcats a 28-8 setback in front of a homecoming crowd at Sexton Field.
Newport struck first when Jordan Neal dashed 55 yards for the game's opening touchdown at the 9:34 mark of the first quarter. Jerry Ellis added an eight-yard touchdown with 8:48 to play in the first half, as the visitors took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Bobcats made a game of it in the third quarter. Luke Harper's three-yard scoring run, and ensuing two-point conversion, brought Walnut Ridge to within 14-8 with 8:29 to play in the quarter.
Newport's defense would not allow another point, however, and the Greyhounds put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter scores. Joe Brodus scored on a four-yard run early in the period to make the score 22-8. Neal scored on a 39-yard burst in the final minute to close out the scoring.
Harper led Walnut Ridge in rushing with 78 yards on 25 attempts. Will Weir had 12 yards on five carries, and Colin Phillips added five yards on five attempts.
Weir finished with eight completions on 23 pass attempts, for 102 yards.
Michael Bounds had four receptions for 40 yards, and Cade Burris caught three passes for 61 yards. Phillips had a one-yard reception.
Walnut Ridge fell to 4-1 with the loss and 1-1 in 3A-3 conference play. The Bobcats take to the road this week to face the Osceola Seminoles in another conference showdown.
