Bobcats fall to Newport
Newport used a strong ground game and a stingy defense to hand the Walnut Ridge Bobcats their first loss of the season Friday night. The Greyhounds rushed for 344 yards in handing the Bobcats a 28-8 setback in front of a homecoming crowd at Sexton Field.
Newport struck first when Jordan Neal dashed 55 yards for the game's opening touchdown at the 9:34 mark of the first quarter. Jerry Ellis added an eight-yard touchdown with 8:48 to play in the first half, as the visitors took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Hoxie, WR split in volleyball action
Hoxie's Lady Mustangs overcame an early deficit to defeat the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats in high school volleyball action Thursday at Hoxie.
Walnut Ridge won the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-17, before the Lady Mustangs charged back to tie the match by winning the third set 25-18 and the fourth 25-16. Hoxie then took the decisive fifth set 15-8.
Hoxie drops close game to Manila
The Manila Lions stopped Hoxie on downs at the five-yard line late in the game to preserve a 24-21 win over the Mustangs in 3A-3 Conference football action Friday night at Manila.
Diamani Davis gave Hoxie an early lead with a 51-yard run on the Mustangs' first possession. The PAT gave Hoxie a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest.
Lady Mustangs sweep Highland
Hoxie hosted Highland in high school volleyball action on Sept. 27, and swept both the senior high and junior high matches.
The Lady Mustangs won the senior high match 25-13, 25-20, 25-11.
For Hoxie, Katelyn Jamison had six digs and was 7/7 from the service line. Kayla Roberts had five digs, seven kills and was 14/15 serving, with four aces. Christin Barker had eight kills and was 13/13 serving, with an ace.
WR beats Newport, falls to Pocahontas
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats had a tough stretch on the volleyball court last week, dropping matches to Hoxie and Pocahontas, after defeating Newport to begin the week.
The Lady Bobcats fell to the Pocahontas Lady Redskins in three sets, 20-25, 24-26, 15-25.
