Mustangs fall to Newport

The Newport Greyhounds racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground in a 43-0 shutout of the Hoxie Mustangs in the 3A-3 Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Newport.

Newport led 14-0 after the first quarter, and opened up the lead to 36-0 in the second period. The Greyhounds added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Hoxie quarterback Chandler Spradlin completed four-of-eight passes, for 15 yards.

Diamani Davis led the Mustangs in rushing with 69 yards on 18 carries. Spradlin added 37 yards on 15 carries. Colton Robins had 22 yards on four carries, and Keifer Wilson had four yards on four carries.

Chance Moore finished with 32 receiving yards on three catches, and Davis had a catch.

The loss left the Mustangs 0-1 in conference play and 0-4 overall. Hoxie travels to Manila Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest against the Lions.
