Mustangs fall to Newport
The Newport Greyhounds racked up nearly 400 yards on the ground in a 43-0 shutout of the Hoxie Mustangs in the 3A-3 Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Newport.
Newport led 14-0 after the first quarter, and opened up the lead to 36-0 in the second period. The Greyhounds added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Hoxie quarterback Chandler Spradlin completed four-of-eight passes, for 15 yards.
Diamani Davis led the Mustangs in rushing with 69 yards on 18 carries. Spradlin added 37 yards on 15 carries. Colton Robins had 22 yards on four carries, and Keifer Wilson had four yards on four carries.
Bobcats beat Manila to continue streak
Walnut Ridge scored 26 points in the third quarter to break open a close game and the Bobcats went on to defeat the Manila Lions 38-15 in senior high football action Friday night at Sexton Field.
Luke Harper broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Colin Phillips scored on a nine-yard run in the second period, as the Bobcats went into halftime leading 12-7.
Harper keyed Walnut Ridge's explosion in the third period, with touchdown runs of three, 33 and 14 yards. Quarterback Will Weir found Slade Dalton on a 35-yard scoring pass in the period. Harper also ran for a two-point conversion, as the Bobcats took a commanding 38-7 lead.
Lady Mustangs compete in Playday
The Hoxie senior high volleyball team competed in the Ron and Pat Carmack Playday on Saturday in Jonesboro.
The Lady Mustangs finished third in their pool of Nettleton, Westside and Liberty Tech, and 12th out of 24 teams. Hoxie advanced to the silver bracket tournament, where they defeated West Memphis 25-14, 25-10 before losing to Mountain Home in the semifinals 25-21, 15-25, 6-15.
For the tournament, Katelyn Jamison finished with 28 digs, four kills and was 25-26 serving. Kayla Roberts had an assist, five digs, 27 kills, seven blocks and was 24/25 serving. Christin Barker had 34 digs and was 40/40 serving, with two aces.
Lady Cats sweep Cave City
Walnut Ridge traveled to Cave City to take on the Cavewomen in high school volleyball action on Thursday. The Lady Bobcats swept the senior high match 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.
For the Lady Cats, Madi Mullen was 13/14 serving, with three aces and nine digs. Baylee Davis was 18/18 serving, with six aces, four digs and an assist. Baylee Burris was 13/16 from the line, with four aces, seven kills, four digs and 13 assists.
Baylee Haskins had three aces, four kills, three digs and seven assists. Olivia Cox had a kill and two digs. Emma Rice had an ace and 12 kills. Claire Fisher had an ace and two digs. Sheridan Smith had a kill and a dig, and Anna Wilcoxson had eight digs and an assist.
