Bobcats trample Poyen, 38-6
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2016 football season with a 38-6 thrashing of the Poyen Indians Friday night at Sexton Field.
Luke Harper and Will Weir each accounted for three touchdowns, while the Bobcat defense held the Indians to 90 yards of offense.
Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Weir hit Tristan Hoffman with a five-yard touchdown pass. Cade Burris ran for the two-point conversion to give the Cats an 8-0 lead with 8:20 to play in the opening period.
The Bobcats broke the game open in the second quarter. First, Harper outraced the Indian defense for a 29-yard score to stretch the Bobcats' lead to 14-0 with 10:02 to play in the half. Harper scored again, this time on a nine-yard run, at the 4:56 to make the score 20-0. Walnut Ridge struck again in the closing seconds of the period when Weir found Slade Dalton with a 12-yard strike, giving the Bobcats a 26-0 halftime lead.
Harper found the end zone on a five-yard run in the third quarter, extending the Cats' advantage to 32-0. Walnut Ridge's final points of the evening came on Weir's seven-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats host East Poinsett County Friday night at Sexton Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
