Bobcats trample Poyen, 38-6
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2016 football season with a 38-6 thrashing of the Poyen Indians Friday night at Sexton Field.
Luke Harper and Will Weir each accounted for three touchdowns, while the Bobcat defense held the Indians to 90 yards of offense.
Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Weir hit Tristan Hoffman with a five-yard touchdown pass. Cade Burris ran for the two-point conversion to give the Cats an 8-0 lead with 8:20 to play in the opening period.
Mustangs struggle against Trumann
Trumann's Cade Gartman rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 34-0 victory over the Hoxie Mustangs Friday night at Crider Field.
The Wildcats took a 6-0 lead on Preston Heavener's one-yard run in the first quarter. Trumann extended its lead in the second period when Gartman scored from a yard out. Gartman ran for the two-point conversion to give Trumann a 14-0 lead, which they carried to the locker room at halftime.
Trumann pulled away in the second half. Gartman eluded Mustang defenders for a 59-yard scoring run to stretch the Wildcat's lead to 20-0. Later in the period, Gartman added a four-yard touchdown to push the lead to 26-0. Trumann added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter on Kolton Jones's seven-yard run. Jay Taylor ran for the two-point conversion to set the final score.
Lady Cats beat Harrisburg
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats volleyball team defeated Harrisburg 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16 on Aug. 29 in Walnut Ridge. The victory improved the Lady Cats overall record to 5-4-1 on the season.
Against the Lady Hornets, Anna Wilcoxson was 12/12 serving, with two aces and five digs. Baylee Burris finished with an ace, eight kills, seven assists and 10 digs. Baylee Davis was 16/17 serving and had 11 digs. Baylee Haskins was 15/17 serving, with an ace, eight kills, 12 assists and 13 digs.
Emma Rice had an ace and nine kills. Madi Mullen was 17/17 serving, with two kills, three assists and six digs. Olivia Cox had an ace, five kills and an assist. Sheridan Smith contributed two kills, an assist and a dig, and Claire Fisher had a dig.
