Summer's end
signals busy fall

Summer's unofficial end is coming this weekend as we celebrate Labor Day on Monday. Area high school and college football teams are starting their schedules with season openers. The busy fall season will bring such events as the Sept. 10 Cavenaugh Thumperthon 5K and the Beatles at the Ridge festival on Sept. 16-17.

Pictures of the Past

This photo of Juanita Johnson's grandmother's residence was featured in the Sesquicentennial calendar of preservation activities published by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program in 1986. The Sarah Kindrick residence stood on East Main Street in Walnut Ridge across from the first courthouse. The neat, cream-colored home with its brown trim was a welcome sight to hungry lawyers and court officials during court terms because the widow Kindrick would often serve them meals. The ladder propped against the right side of the house was probably meant as a fire escape. The house did, in fact, burn in 1905, about 10 years after this photo was made. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
