The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce will host an Open House on Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 4-7 pm to reveal their interior renovations and showcase their recently acquired historical photograph collection.
The chamber office, located in the historic Iron Mountain Depot, was built in 1908. Beautifully restored in 1995, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
With monies donated from Cavenaugh GM Chevrolet and many hours of volunteer labor from the Lawrence County Beautification and Revitalization Committee, the depot has realized its first and much needed interior update in over 20 years. In addition to the chamber offices, the Amtrak waiting room and bathrooms were also renovated.
The walls of the office and meeting room have been adorned with nearly 100 newly framed and matted photographs of Lawrence County scenes, some dating back to the 1890s. The majority of these pictures have hung in the upstairs conference room of Regions Bank in Walnut Ridge for over 25 years, originally compiled by the bank's vice president of public relations at the time, Mary Evelyn Sloan.
They were all recently gifted to the Chamber by president Mike Miller, in keeping with the late president Keith Brand's wishes that they be displayed where the public could enjoy them.
Jon Walter and James Whitlow will be signing copies of their book "Images of America: Walnut Ridge and Hoxie" during the open house. All proceeds from book sales will go to the Lawrence County Historical Society.
The public is invited to attend.
