In my earliest memories of being at The TD, Howard Golden was always there. Those early memories include our office having a noisy newspaper press, Linotype machines and raised metal type. Howard was a part of the process of helping to run that equipment and keep it running.
From my memories at a young age, Howard was a member of the printing crew that include Vernon "Bud" Baker, Leon "Shorty" Woody, Rennard Cooper and a few others for shorter periods of time.
Pictures of the Past
The historic Thanford home in Clover Bend was 89 years old when it was destroyed by fire on July 31, 1986. A portrait of Alice French, the original owner, is one of the pieces of history saved from the fire. It was painted by Nancy Phillips, who with her husband Lance, meticulously restored the mansion in the 1970s. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
