Gala raises $32,000
for Children's Shelter
Ticket sales and generous bidding on a variety of live and silent auction items helped raise over $32,000 at the Children's Shelter Summer Gala held Thursday evening at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.
Fran Cavenaugh, event chair, said, "I just want to thank everyone for coming out and opening up their hearts and wallets for the kids."
She acknowledged that $32,000 is a lot of money to raise in one night and will help fund the monthly budget for the shelter for a month-and-a-half to two months. "It's an ongoing fundraising struggle," she added.
Cavenaugh reported that 172 tickets were sold for the event, and an estimated 160 people attended.
Silent and live auction items varied and included gift baskets, artwork, designer jewelry and purses, concert and ballgame tickets, an overnight fishing trip, gourmet dinners and more.
Mel Fender's Chicken Shack Produce catered the dinner, which included an assortment of hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Live music was also provided during the silent auction and dinner.
In addition to Cavenaugh, other event committee members were Melissa McVay, Milton Smith, Judy Turnbull and Ken Ziegler.
Volunteers included Sharna Butts, Ed Harris, Morgan Horne, Frank Hughey, Dina Rose, Madisyn Salard and Gary Salard Jr.
The Children's Shelter is a private, nonprofit organization that provides 24-hour emergency, temporary residential care to children who are victims of family violence, neglect and physical or sexual abuse.
