Gala raises $32,000
Ticket sales and generous bidding on a variety of live and silent auction items helped raise over $32,000 at the Children's Shelter Summer Gala held Thursday evening at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.

Fran Cavenaugh, event chair, said, "I just want to thank everyone for coming out and opening up their hearts and wallets for the kids."
She acknowledged that $32,000 is a lot of money to raise in one night and will help fund the monthly budget for the shelter for a month-and-a-half to two months. "It's an ongoing fundraising struggle," she added.
Court approves raises for county employees
The Lawrence County Quorum Court approved a three percent raise for county employees on its second and third readings during Monday night's meeting.
The raises will be paid retroactively from the beginning of 2016.
In regard to raises, District Court Clerk Joyce Roberts spoke out during the meeting stating she wasn't paid in 2012 and 2013 for raises that were approved by the court at that time. The raises did get corrected but she asked why she hasn't been paid retroactively for the previous years.
County Fair begins Monday
The Lawrence County Fair, featuring educational exhibits, a carnival, a PRCA rodeo, livestock events and much more, will kick off on Monday at Imboden.
The fair opens Monday evening with the Lawrence County Fair Pageants at the Sloan-Hendrix Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. The time was originally set for 5 p.m. but was pushed back due to it being the first day of school.
Tuesday evening at 7 there will be horse halter class events in the rodeo arena.
TD Summertime Photo Contest winners named
Mady McGinnis, 14, of Walnut Ridge was the overall winner of the 2016 The Times Dispatch Summertime Photo Contest. Her photo, entitled "Sunday Drive" was also the first place winner in the Summer Bonding category of the contest.
Paul McCarty of Greers Ferry took second place in Summer bonding and third went to Malorie Frazier of Walnut Ridge.
This year's contest was judged by Jonesboro Sun Photographer Staci Vandagriff.
Hwy. 67 to open Thursday
After years of construction, Highway 67 has made its way to Lawrence County.
On Thursday, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department will officially dedicate the section of Highway 67 from Highway 226 north, near Swifton, to the Walnut Ridge/Hoxie Highway 63 Bypass.
Following a 10 a.m. ceremony, the new highway will open to the public. With the opening of this section, individuals will be able to drive directly from the Highway 63 Bypass to Little Rock.
