Pictures of the Past

Standing in front of his blacksmith shop with an unidentified person, Jacob William Wendel (right) was born in Ohio to German parents in 1860. Moving to Portia in the early 20th century, he worked in the sawmill industry and later opened his own blacksmith shop across the street from the current location of the Portia City Park. Mr. Wendel's daughter, Nettie, was the mother of the late Floyd West of Portia. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
