Rails to Trails in final
stage of development
The Lawrence Country Rails to Trails Committee currently has a grant application pending with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. If approved, this grant will help to fund at least some of the remaining projects in the final stage of development of the Rails to Trails walking and biking path.
The application was hand-delivered to the ATHD's Little Rock headquarters earlier this summer by committee chair Lewis Slaughter and secretary Lee Turnbull. The committee is hoping to learn the outcome of the grant in the near future.
Rails to Trails lacks three main things that the committee has applied for funding to help accomplish.
"Our highest priority is to finish paving the existing trail," committee member Brett Cooper said. This task will require paving about 1,300 feet of the trail located west of Hwy. 67.
Secondly, the committee wants to install safety markings and signage at the intersection of the trail with Hwy. 67 to ensure that the crossing is kept as safe as possible.
Finally, the committee has requested funding to pave an extension of the trail to Williams Baptist College and the College City area. "This extension will make the trail much more accessible to WBC students and residents of the north side of Walnut Ridge," Cooper added.
This remaining construction to the trail is the sixth and final stage of development to the project that has spanned over the last decade.
