Walnut Ridge Council
supports park efforts

Mechelle Teel-Davis with the Stewart Park Committee discussed efforts to develop a structured plan for the future of the park at Monday night's Walnut Ridge City Council meeting.

Teel-Davis said she has been working with Ecological Design Group, Inc., out of Wynne. The group has done some preliminary work and submitted a proposal for the work required to complete a master plan.

Kyle Gaines with Ecological Design Group is the main contact for the project, which would emphasize programming, connectivity and stormwater management.

Work completed, grant check received

Work on the taxiway and ramps at the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport was recently completed, and Jerry Chism, director of the Arkansas Department of Aeronautics was at the airport Tuesday morning to view the work and present a check for $495,891.80.

Airport Commission Chair Don Cavenaugh said the airport took advantage of a special payment grant offered by the Department of Aeronautics in April of last year.

Hoxie to increase mosquito spraying

The Hoxie City Council met July 12 where they took the following actions:

agreed to lease a second mosquito sprayer for $250 a month to allow for simultaneous spraying on opposite sides of the city.

authorized Mayor Lanny Tinker to enter into an agreement with Grady Auction and Realty for the sale of used equipment from the former Save-A-Lot store. The auction will be held Aug. 18 at the store.

Local event celebrates Hoxie's 'First Stand'

On Saturday, several gathered for a reception celebrating the events of 1955, which have come to be known as "Hoxie: The First Stand."

The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce held the event, which was hosted by Executive Director Fran Cavenaugh at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.

Cavenaugh welcomed attendees and announced that the Hoxie School District has agreed to allow the placement of a museum replicating the Hoxie Colored School to be located on their campus.
