Event to celebrate
Hoxie first stand
The 2016 "Hoxie The First Stand Celebration" will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.
The event will mark the 61st anniversary of the integration of Hoxie School and kickoff efforts to construct the Hoxie Civil Rights Museum.
In 1955, Hoxie School voluntarily integrated and became the first challenged integration in the state of Arkansas. When segregationists fought the decision in the court system, the board upheld its decision, as did the courts, paving the way for many other integration efforts in the future.
Fran Cavenaugh, executive director of the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, will speak, as well as Hoxie Mayor Lanny Tinker and members of the Hoxie student body in 1955.
There will also be a showing of the documentary, "Hoxie: The First Stand," and refreshments will be served.
Everyone is welcome, and admission to the event is free.
