Court moves forward
on employee raises

The Lawrence County Quorum Court approved the first reading of an ordinance establishing a three percent raise for county employees.

This raise, which will not apply to elected officials, will cost the county about $78,480 annually. Upon the final reading and approval of the ordinance, the employees will receive the raise as well as be paid retroactively from Jan. 1, 2016, in a lump sum.

Justice Lloyd Clark discussed setting a compensation policy that clarifies what employees should be paid based on hours and qualifications. County Judge Dale Freeman, while stating he'd never operated a business that way, did agree that something needed to be established, but didn't want to over extend the county's budget.

Sheriff to review intake policy,
new jail will increase safety

Sheriff Jeff Yates announced the intake policy at the county jail is under review. A new procedure is being developed that will help determine which inmates are the county's responsibility and which are the arresting agency's responsibility when it comes to liability and medical treatment.

To prevent confusion on which agency made the arrest, what the charges are and what to do if medical treatment is required, the policy being utilized currently requires the arresting officer to fill out paperwork before the jail will accept the inmate. The charges would have to be verified with Yates, Chief Deputy Tony Waldrupe or Jail Administrator Debbie Burleson before intake could be completed.

Event to celebrate Hoxie first stand

The 2016 "Hoxie The First Stand Celebration" will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Studio in downtown Walnut Ridge.

The event will mark the 61st anniversary of the integration of Hoxie School and kickoff efforts to construct the Hoxie Civil Rights Museum.

In 1955, Hoxie School voluntarily integrated and became the first challenged integration in the state of Arkansas. When segregationists fought the decision in the court system, the board upheld its decision, as did the courts, paving the way for many other integration efforts in the future.
