Pictures of the Past

In the late 1910s, the Old River Fishing and Outing Club was formed by prominent citizens of Walnut Ridge and Pocahontas. It was located on Black River near the county line. The impressive two-story brick building contained a large kitchen and ballroom with several bedrooms upstairs. Big time bands from St. Louis made frequent visits for entertainment until the Great Depression. It was destroyed by fire in the 1930s. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
