New WR wards to be
drawn, filing to open

The Walnut Ridge City Council voted on a new ward map at Monday night's meeting. The wards will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2017, upon the consolidation of Walnut Ridge and College City.

With three alternatives, drawn up by James Walden of Garver and Associates, on display in the Walnut Ridge Police Complex the afternoon prior to the meeting, citizens were able to give their input on what option they preferred.

The council chose alternative 1, which was the closest to the current wards with the least shifting of boundaries. Other alternatives would have caused aldermen incumbents to enter into the race against each other and would leave other wards without a current council member residing in them.

WR Council takes action on dilapidated buildings

Three condemnation resolutions were on the agenda for Monday night's Walnut Ridge City Council meeting. Properties at 3566 Hwy. 67N, on the corner of Miller and Custom and at 121 Southeast Front were all brought before the council.

JR Rogers, former Walnut Ridge mayor and alderman, addressed the council in regards to his sisters' property located on Hwy. 67N, stating that he had received the notice but his sisters, who are the owners, had not. He said he had hoped to make the repairs without bothering them but a stop work order due to lack of a permit prevented him from proceeding.

Wanda Thornton and Louise Sifford, the owners, had a letter prepared stating they had not been aware of the possibility of condemnation until seeing recent news reports on the matter.

Judge Weeks: Effort to clean up
old warrants, fines was success

A recent effort to address numerous outstanding warrants in the Lawrence County District Court has proved successful, according to District Court Judge Adam Weeks.

A little over $27,000 was collected on outstanding warrants in Walnut Ridge, Hoxie and Lawrence County, he said.

Some 72 (or 29.39 percent) out of 358 warrants have now been removed from the outstanding warrants list.

As a result of the process, 14 people were also reinstated with their driver's licenses.

Pam Kopp resigns as WR city clerk

Walnut Ridge City Clerk/Treasurer Pam Kopp has turned in her letter of resignation to the city council. The letter, dated June 17, stated her intended last day of work would be June 30.

She stated that after sustaining a recent stroke, she felt she could not perform the job that was expected of her, and the decision to resign was a difficult one to make.

"I have enjoyed working with each and every one of you, and hope you and your families are blessed. The future for the city of Walnut Ridge looks very hopeful and a lot of exciting things are to come."
