Williams names new
head baseball coach

Stephen Abanathy

The Williams Baptist College athletic department announced Stephen Abanathy the new head baseball coach on May 11.

Abanathy is a 2005 WBC alum and current resident of Jonesboro. He will graduate with his master's degree in Sports Administration this summer.

"Stephen understands the culture and mission of Williams. He has the personality to be a very good recruiter and the self-confidence to provide discipline and organization for the baseball program," said Director of Athletics Jeff Rider.

"We are going to work hard and take pride in what we do," said Abanathy. "My goal is to make every player that puts on that Eagle jersey the best ballplayer they can possibly be, while focusing on becoming the best man they can be," he continued.

Abanathy has coached various levels since 2007, but when the opportunity to return to his alma mater materialized, he jumped at it.

"My grandparents, parents, sister, brother-in-law and my wife all attended WBC. My goal has always been to coach at the collegiate level, and I could not be happier to head back to the place I called home for four years," added Abanathy.

"We look forward to seeing what he can accomplish as our head baseball coach and believe he will bring great success on and off the field," concluded Rider.

The Portageville, Mo., native was a First Team All-Conference player for the Eagles in 2005. He is the son of Tim and Lynda Abanathy and is married to Rachel Abanathy. The new Eagles coach also jokes that they are the proud parents of a beagle named Cooper.

Abanathy replaces Frank Lee, who stepped down after five seasons as head coach of the baseball Eagles to be a faculty member and assistant coach at Central Baptist College.

Williams competes in the American Midwest Conference of the NAIA.
