Williams names new
head baseball coach
The Williams Baptist College athletic department announced Stephen Abanathy the new head baseball coach on May 11.
Abanathy is a 2005 WBC alum and current resident of Jonesboro. He will graduate with his master's degree in Sports Administration this summer.
"Stephen understands the culture and mission of Williams. He has the personality to be a very good recruiter and the self-confidence to provide discipline and organization for the baseball program," said Director of Athletics Jeff Rider.
"We are going to work hard and take pride in what we do," said Abanathy. "My goal is to make every player that puts on that Eagle jersey the best ballplayer they can possibly be, while focusing on becoming the best man they can be," he continued.
Lady Eagles advance in NAIA
The Williams Baptist College softball team traveled to Alexandria, La., for the first round of Nationals. Williams squared off against the 10th-ranked Redhawks of Martin Methodist University in the first game of the LSU-Alexandria bracket. WBC was able to take down its top-10 foe 2-0 and advance in the winner's bracket.
The Lady Eagles were the visiting team on the scoreboard after losing the coin toss on Sunday. Callie Brooks and Brooke Mason were able to take advantage of a couple of Martin Methodist miscues to reach base in the first, but WBC failed to score. Rylee Rogers shut down the MMU bats by working a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first.
Ashley Lyons started off the second inning with a single to left field, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Haley Hambrick put down a sac bunt to advance Lyons to third. The Redhawks were able to work out of the inning with a 1-3 putout and a strikeout to keep Williams off the scoreboard. Rogers worked another 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout, pop out and a 6-3 groundout.
