Pictures of the Past

One of the worst natural disasters to hit Lawrence County occurred on May 9, 1927, when several tornados touched down throughout the county destroying homes, livestock, schools and businesses. Twenty-eight people lost their life in Lawrence County alone. The home of Sam McComas was heavily damaged, but rebuilt. Today it is the home of Robert Bryan and Gayla Warden of Hoxie. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
