Residents of Walnut Ridge and College City approved consolidation of the two towns in a special election on Tuesday.
The final vote by Walnut Ridge voters was 264 for (89 percent) and 32 against (11 percent).
College City voters also passed the measure by a vote of 38 for (76 percent) to 12 against (24 percent).
The name of the newly formed municipality was also on the ballot with residents choosing between Walnut Ridge and College City. Walnut Ridge was selected as the name.
In Walnut Ridge, 277 voted for Walnut Ridge as the name and 15 voted for College City. College City voters cast 34 ballots for Walnut Ridge and 16 ballots for College City.
Many residents took advantage of early voting with 214 casting ballots prior to election day.
Wards for the newly consolidated city will now be redrawn and a new city council will be elected in the November election.
At the beginning of the year 2017, College City will cease to exist. All assets and liabilities of College City will belong to Walnut Ridge.
