Lady Cats advance to regionals
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats edged Salem 7-5 in the first round of the 2A-2 District Softball Tournament on Thursday at Pangburn. The victory secured a spot in the 2A North Regional Tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday at Marked Tree. It will be the Lady Bobcats first trip to the regional tournament since 2012.
Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard first against Salem when Megan Jared scored on a single by Whitney Rider in the top of the third inning. Salem tied the contest 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but the Lady Cats struck for three runs in the fourth inning. A single by Briley Henson, and a walk to Mallory Spain gave the Lady Cats a pair of baserunners. Jared lined a triple, scoring Henson and Spain and putting Walnut Ridge ahead 3-1. Jared came home on a ground ball by Baylee Haskins for the final run of the inning.
Salem plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-2. After a scoreless fifth inning, Walnut Ridge added to its lead when Rider belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Jared opened the inning with a walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a Salem defensive error. Haskins drew a walk, setting the stage for Rider's blast, which gave Walnut Ridge a 7-2 lead.
Baseball Mustangs qualify for regional tournament
Dylan Littlejohn pitched a two-hit shutout and the Hoxie Mustangs rolled past Osceola 10-0 in the first round of the 3A-3 District Baseball Tournament Thursday at Corning.
Hoxie led 3-0 after four innings, but erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-0 lead and end the game due to the run rule.
Hillcrest advances to regionals
The Hillcrest baseball team defeated Izard County Consolidated 13-3 in the first round of the 1A-2 North District Tournament on Thursday. The victory secured a spot in the 1A-2 Regional Tournament for the Screamin' Eagles. Hillcrest will play Bay on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in Viola.
Cats end regular season with win
The Walnut Ridge baseball team wrapped up regular-season play with a 17-1 win over Marked Tree on April 25 at Stewart Park.
Walnut Ridge jumped on the Indians early with nine runs in the first inning, followed by five runs in the second and three in the third. Marked Tree's only run came in the top of the fourth inning.
Lady Hounds win tourney game
Sloan-Hendrix senior Bailey Bradley picked up her fifth win in the circle and went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs to lead the Lady Greyhounds past White County Central 16-1 in the first round of the 2A-2 District Softball Tournament on Thursday at Pangburn.
Skylia Lester also went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, while Hannah Walton was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs.
Lady Mustangs drop close game in district tourney
Hoxie scored nine runs in the final two innings, but the rally fell one run short as the Lady Mustangs fell to Corning 11-10 in the first round of the 3A-3 District Softball Tournament Thursday at Manila.
The contest was scoreless until Corning broke through for four runs in the top of the third inning. Hoxie plated a run in the bottom of the inning to cut Corning's lead to 4-1.
S-H, WR are district champions
The Sloan-Hendrix boys and Walnut Ridge girls won team titles at the 2A-2 Conference Track Meet on April 26 in Pocahontas.
The Lady Cats amassed 180 points to claim the title. The Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds placed third at the meet with 83 points.
WR claims junior track titles
Walnut Ridge captured both the boys and girls team titles at the 2A-2 Junior High Track Meet on April 22 at Pocahontas. The Sloan-Hendrix boys and girls teams each placed fourth at the event.
Bobcats Tyler Hall and Chase Petty were the high point scorers with 37 points apiece. Bailey Augustine of Walnut Ridge was the girls high point performer with 31.5 points.
Lady Mustangs finish third at district meet
The Hoxie senior high girls track team competed in the 3A-3 District Meet on April 25 at Pocahontas. The Lady Mustangs finished in third place, behind Rivercrest and Osceola.
