WR to allocate more
funds to street paving
Aldermen approved a resolution amending the 2016 budget allocating $50,000 for paving and street repair during a special Walnut Ridge City Council meeting held on April 26. This is in addition to the $100,000 the council appropriated earlier in the year.
Councilmen agreed that with the current cost of paving as low as it is, it is in the best interest of the city to spend as much as possible to improve the roads.
The rezoning of a tract of land located along Highway 91 from A-1 (Agriculture) to C-3 (Commercial) was also discussed. The rezoning was introduced at the regular meeting on April 18 and was approved on its first reading. Due to a discrepancy in the legal description, the second and third readings were tabled for the special meeting to allow time for clarification. The rezoning was passed unanimously by all aldermen present at the special meeting.
Also at the meeting, Mayor Charles Snapp informed the council that the 1985 Ford Fire Truck had been sold to the Smithville Fire Department for $12,500.
Fire Chief Frank Owens told the council that the truck wasn't used very much by the Walnut Ridge Fire Department and he felt like it would be used a lot more in Smithville. He also reminded the council that the Walnut Ridge Rural Fire District paid $25,000 on the new fire truck purchased for the Walnut Ridge Fire Department and that the Smithville Fire Department loaned the WRFD a used pump truck until a different truck could be purchased.
