Pictures of the Past

A small steam-powered supply boat is tied to a houseboat during the dredging of Cache River that runs along the eastern boundary of Lawrence County in 1923. The two-story houseboat served as the living quarters for the crew of the dredge boat that was featured in this section last week. Levi Craven was a crewmember and his wife, Sarah, was a cook for the dredging operation. The Cravens were the maternal grandparents of Addie Lou Davidson Saunders and great-great grandparents of David and Steve Saunders. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
