Mustangs record three wins

The Hoxie baseball team enjoyed an undefeated week on the diamond, winning all three of its contests last week.


Hoxie routed 3A-3 Conference opponent Piggott 13-2 at Piggott on Friday.

Piggott scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead, but Hoxie's bats came alive in the top of the third inning as the Mustangs stormed back to take a 7-2 lead. Brody Raby tied the game with a two-run double that plated Paul Adamson and Wesley Wright, who had both singled. After Lucas Willfond reached on an error, Dylan Littlejohn delivered a bunt single to score Raby. Willfond came home on a single by Austen Blocker to make the score 4-2 in the Mustangs' favor. Following a walk to Alex Carpenter, Adamson hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. The Mohawks committed several throwing errors on the play, allowing three more Mustangs to cross the plate.

Hoxie added five runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth to close out the scoring. Mustang pitchers held Piggott scoreless after the second inning, and the game ended after the fifth due to the run rule.

Wright, Raby, Willfond, Blocker, Adamson and Augustus Wicker each had two hits for Hoxie, while Littlejohn contributed one hit. Raby, Wicker and Adamson each drove in two runs, while Willfond, Littlejohn and Blocker had one RBI apiece. Raby scored three runs. Wright, Willfond and Blocker each scored two runs. Wicker, Littlejohn, Carpenter and Adamson each scored one run.

Raby earned the win on the mound. He surrendered two unearned runs on three hits and recorded seven strikeouts in four innings of work. Wright pitched an inning in relief, finishing with two strikeouts.


The Mustangs defeated Newport 5-1 in a non-conference game on April 19 at Hoxie.

The Greyhounds took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Hoxie answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Willfond and Littlejohn to move into a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs extended their lead to 4-1 in the third inning when Blocker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Carpenter followed with a sacrifice fly. Hoxie's final run came in the sixth inning when James Johnson scored on a wild pitch.

Johnson finished 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs. Littlejohn went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Willfond contributed a hit, an RBI and a run, and Wicker added a hit. Carpenter had an RBI, and Raby scored a run.

Littlejohn earned the pitching victory. He pitched five innings and allowed one unearned run on just two hits, and had three strikeouts. Raby pitched one inning in relief, and Adamson pitched the final inning and had one strikeout.


Hoxie began the week with a 9-6 win over the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds on April 18 at Hoxie.

Sloan-Hendrix raced to an early 5-0 lead with four runs in the first inning and one in the third.

Hoxie climbed back in the game with a four-run fourth. Wicker opened with a single and eventually wound up at third following a ground ball by Blocker and defensive errors by the Greyhounds. Wicker then came home on a single by Adamson. Johnson reached on an error and Adamson moved to third base. Wright delivered a single to score Adamson, and Raby smashed a double to bring home Johnson and Wright.

Sloan-Hendrix added a run in top of the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 6-4, but the Mustangs answered with another big inning to take the lead.

Johnson doubled to score Carpenter, who had led off the inning with a single. Wright followed with a single to score Johnson and tie the game 6-6. Willfond doubled, sending Wright to third, and Littlejohn walked to load the bases. A wild pitch by the Greyhounds allowed Wright to score the go-ahead run. Wicker and Blocker added RBI-singles to give the Mustangs a pair of insurance runs.

Adamson shut the Greyhounds out in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.

Wicker started the game on the mound for Hoxie. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits in three innings. Adamson pitched the final four innings and allowed one earned run on two hits to pick up the win.

Offensively for the Mustangs, Wright went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Raby also went 2-for-4 and had two RBIs. Johnson finished with one hit, an RBI and scored two runs. Willfond was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Littlejohn had a hit and scored a run. Wicker went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run. Blocker had a hit and an RBI, and Adamson finished with one hit, one RBI and scored a run.
