Bobcats beat Sloan-Hendrix
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats defeated Sloan-Hendrix 13-0 in 2A-2 Conference baseball action on Thursday at Walnut Ridge.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth.
Drake Smith pitched a shutout in the five-inning game. He allowed six hits and had four strikeouts.
Mustangs record three wins
The Hoxie Mustangs traveled to Newport and defeated the Greyhounds 13-2 in high school baseball action on Friday.
Tied 1-1 after two innings, the Mustangs began to pull away with three runs in the top of the third. Newport cut the lead to 4-2 with a run in the bottom half of the frame, but Hoxie added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to move out to a 6-2 advantage. The Mustangs put the game away with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 13-2 lead. Paul Adamson, pitching in relief of starter Wesley Wright, held Newport scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to end the game due to the run rule.
Bobcats compete in Hollister Classic
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team traveled to Hollister, Mo., to compete in the Hollister Baseball Classic last weekend.
The Bobcats dropped their first game in the tournament to Hillcrest, Mo., 9-2 on Friday afternoon, as Hornet pitchers limited Walnut Ridge to three hits in the contest.
Will Weir went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Cade Burris had a hit and an RBI, while Chase Baker had a hit and scored a run.
Lady Mustangs fall to Corning
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs hosted 3A-3 Conference rival Corning for a softball doubleheader on Thursday.
Corning won the opener 17-0 in three innings, scoring all of their runs in the first inning. Jarah Jones had a double, and Cheyenne Hatfield had a single for Hoxie.
MacKenzie Orrick and Jones pitched for the Lady Mustangs, with Jones taking the loss.
Lady Cats beat Hoxie in cross-town matchup
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs hosted Walnut Ridge in high school softball action on April 4. The Lady Bobcats won the cross-town matchup 17-1 in four innings.
After a scoreless first inning, Walnut Ridge opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second inning. Alyssa Jones drew a walk to start the inning, then proceeded to steal second, third and home to give the Lady Cats a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Baylee Haskins smashed a two-run home run that also scored Megan Jared, who had walked.
Lady Cats earn wins
A pair of seven-run innings propelled the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats to 16-6 win over East Poinsett County in high school softball action on Friday at Walnut Ridge.
The Lady Cats opened the game with a big first inning to take an early 7-0 lead. EPC cut the lead to 7-2 in the third inning, but Walnut Ridge responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead. The Lady Warriors added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to close to within 9-6, but Walnut Ridge answered with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 10 runs and end the game due to the run rule.
