Cats have winning week
Walnut Ridge defeated Midland 5-1 in 2A-2 baseball action March 29 at Midland.
Midland took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After battling through three scoreless innings, Walnut Ridge broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to move in front 4-1. The Bobcats added a single run in the top of the seventh, and pitcher Will Weir held the Mustangs scoreless after their early run.
Weir pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on nine hits while registering 12 strikeouts.
Offensively for the Bobcats, Colin Phillips went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Drake Smith had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Chase Baker had a hit and an RBI. Drake Smelser had a hit, and Slade Dalton scored a run.
The Bobcats traveled to Marked Tree on March 28 and hammered the Indians 16-0 in a non-conference matchup.
Walnut Ridge scored six runs in the first inning, eight in the second inning and two in the fourth.
Smith tossed a no-hitter in the four-inning contest and finished with nine strikeouts. On offense, Smith went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and scored a run.
Preston Aaron had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and scoring a run. Weir went 3-for-4 and scored four runs. Smelser went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run.
Phillips had a hit and scored a run, while Dalton scored two runs. Chaz Burgin had a hit and scored two runs. Baker went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and scored two runs, and Kai Cunningham had a hit and an RBI.
The Walnut Ridge junior high baseball team defeated Rector 14-3 on March 28. Mari Thomas was the winning pitcher.
Nash Gill went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Thomas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
