Cats have winning week

Walnut Ridge defeated Midland 5-1 in 2A-2 baseball action March 29 at Midland.

Midland took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. After battling through three scoreless innings, Walnut Ridge broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to move in front 4-1. The Bobcats added a single run in the top of the seventh, and pitcher Will Weir held the Mustangs scoreless after their early run.

Weir pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on nine hits while registering 12 strikeouts.

Offensively for the Bobcats, Colin Phillips went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Drake Smith had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Chase Baker had a hit and an RBI. Drake Smelser had a hit, and Slade Dalton scored a run.

Hillcrest beats Maynard

The Hillcrest Screamin' Eagles defeated Maynard 8-2 in high school baseball action March 29 at Strawberry.

Hillcrest took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the third inning when Dyllan Nunnally came home on a sacrifice fly by Jared Bristow. The Eagles scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Zack Anglin scored on a sac fly by Tyson Durham. Maynard tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in top of the sixth inning. Hillcrest regained the lead with six runs in the bottom of the frame, then held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the seventh to take the win.

Mustangs beat Corning, drop game to Manila

A pair of big innings lifted the Manila Lions to a 9-4 victory over Hoxie in 3A-3 baseball action March 29 at Manila.

The Mustangs led 3-0 after scoring two runs in the first inning and one run in the third, but Manila struck back with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead. Hoxie closed the gap to 5-4 with a run in the fourth inning, but the Lions plated four runs in the fifth inning for a 9-4 lead. The pitchers took over at that point and neither team would score in the final two innings.

Lady Cats record wins

A 13-run first inning proved to be the difference as Walnut Ridge defeated Sloan-Hendrix 18-3 in 2A-2 Conference softball action Friday at Walnut Ridge.

Walnut Ridge's offense was led by Briley Henson, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a triple, and had five RBIs and scored two runs. Whitney Rider went 2-for-3 with a triple, and had three RBIs and scored three runs. Baylee Haskins went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored three runs.

Lady Mustangs have split week

Piggott defeated Hoxie 11-1 in 3A-3 Conference softball action Friday at Piggott.

Hoxie's run came in the third inning when Lari Hart scored on a hit by Katie Romine.

Romine finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Kelsey Moody went 1-for-2 at the plate.

Sydney Gillham took the loss in the circle for the Lady Mustangs. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits, and had two strikeouts.
