Cats compete in tourney
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team traveled to southern Arkansas last week to compete in the Magnolia Spring Break Tournament hosted by Magnolia High School.
The Bobcats dropped their first game of the tournament to Camden Fairview 11-3 on Thursday.
Camden Fairview jumped out to a 5-0 lead single runs in the first two innings and a three-spot in the third. Walnut Ridge closed the gap to 5-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but a four-run bottom of the fourth inning stretched the Cardinals' lead to 9-2. Camden Fairview added runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while Walnut Ridge scored a run in the seventh to set the final score.
For the Bobcats, Colin Phillips went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Preston Aaron went 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Luke Wall also had two hits. Drake Smelser went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Drake Smith had a hit, and Michael Bounds scored a run.
Wall pitched all six innings for Walnut Ridge. He allowed six earned runs on 14 hits, with three strikeouts.
Walnut Ridge got back on the winning track by defeating the Parker's Chapel Trojans 9-2 on Friday.
The Bobcats did most of their damage early, building a 7-2 lead after three innings. The Cats added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Wall led the Bobcats' offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scoring three runs. Will Weir went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored four runs. Chaz Burgin went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Aaron had two hits and two RBIs. Smelser had a hit and an RBI, and Smith added a hit.
Phillips pitched a complete game on the mound, allowing two earned runs on just three hits and recording nine strikeouts.
Walnut Ridge wrapped up tournament play with an exciting 9-8 loss to Genoa Central on Saturday.
The Dragons jumped on the Bobcats early with six runs in the bottom of first inning. Walnut Ridge cut the lead in half with a three-run fourth inning, then added a run in the fifth to trail only 6-4. Genoa Central added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bobcats rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning and tied the game 8-8 with a run in the top of the seventh. The Dragons pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Weir, Wall and Phillips each had a hit and an RBI for Walnut Ridge. Chaz Burgin also drove in a run. Smelser had a hit, and Smith scored a run. Weir, Bounds and Chase Baker each scored a run. Aaron had a hit and scored a run.
A three-run first inning was all the Bobcats needed in a 4-1 win over 2A-2 Conference opponent White County Central on March 22 at Stewart Park.
The Bobcats added a run in the second inning, while WCC avoided the shutout with a run in the fourth inning.
Weir turned in a strong performance on the mound for Walnut Ridge. He allowed one earned run on five hits, while striking out 13 batters.
Aaron had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and scoring a run. Smelser went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Wall had two hits and scored a run. Weir had two hits, while Smith and Phillips each had one hit apiece. Phillips also had an RBI.
Walnut Ridge needed just five innings to hammer Salem 12-1 in a conference matchup on March 21.
Salem got on the scoreboard first, with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cats' offense continued to roll, with four runs in the second inning, two in the third and four in the fourth.
Smith pitched a complete game, allowing one run on three hits, with six strikeouts.
Wall led the Bobcat offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and scoring two runs. Weir had a hit and scored three runs. Aaron finished with two hits and an RBI. Smelser had a hit and drove in two runs. Smith had a hit and scored a run. Bounds had two hits and scored two runs. Kai Cunningham had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs, and Phillips had a hit and scored two runs.
