Davis wins justice of peace seat

Heath Davis won the justice of the peace seat for District 4 in Tuesday's runoff election.

He received 39 votes, while incumbent Douglas Wayland received 36 votes.

Property changes main topic
of discussion at WR meeting

The Walnut Ridge City Council discussed several property issues at the meeting Monday night.

Prior to the regular meeting, two public hearings were held regarding the abandonment of a portion of Vine Street and related alleyways and a portion of the right-of-way at West Poplar.

The right-of-way will be cut by 12 feet on the southwest side from West Fifth Street to West Fourth Street. The abandoned right-of-way will be turned back to the property owner, Sonic, which will aid in plans to build a new facility for the fast food chain.

Hoxie to enforce clean-up,
water maintenance work set

City cleanup and water system maintenance were among topics discussed at the Hoxie City Council March 15 meeting.

With warmer weather and heavy rains, the city is bracing for mosquitoes and overgrown yards. Code enforcement has already issued many informational door hangers, which include a checklist of violations for the officer to mark and leave instructions on what needs cleaned up.

Mayor Lanny Tinker reiterated that there would be no citywide clean up this spring. The grain bed truck is available for dumping large items at the city shop on weekdays.

County sales tax to go into effect April 1

Effective April 1, Lawrence County sales tax will increase by .5 percent for a total county sales tax of 2.5 percent.

The additional .5 percent represents a three-eighth of a cent tax to fund construction of a new county jail that will be collected for approximately 22 years and a one-eighth of a cent tax to fund maintenance that will not expire.

Cities that also have a one percent tax will see a 10 percent overall sales tax with the county increase and the state sales tax, which is 6.5 percent. Cities in Lawrence County with a one percent sales tax include Walnut Ridge, Hoxie and Black Rock.

House fire results in one death

A fire in the middle of the night on March 16 resulted in the death of a teenager, as well as four injuries.

The Black Rock Fire Department was paged to a structure fire on County Road 239 in the Baltz subdivision at approximately 2:13 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed and one individual, Ashlynn Tubbs, 13, was believed to still be in the home. A fatality in the fire has been confirmed, with the body having been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab.
