HEAVY RAINS HIT LAWCO - Walnut Ridge Street Department employees work to clear a ditch after more than two inches of rain fell during showers the middle of last week. Additional rain came over the weekend including heavy rains during a thunderstorm Sunday night. Flood warnings were issued and river levels rose with the Black River at Black Rock climbing to nearly 15 feet gage height and the Spring River at Imboden rose to nearly eight feet, based on data collected by U.S. Geological Survey Monday afternoon.

County to assess elected
officials' salaries for 2017

With several elected officials not meeting the minimum salary required by the state for their positions, the Lawrence County Quorum Court had used longevity pay, which is paid out at the end of the year, to offset the deficit.

However, as discussed in Monday night's meeting, this is only a temporary fix and was proposed at a time when the county wasn't as financially stable.

Runoff election is Tuesday

Early voting is underway in a runoff election from the March 1 Primary. A three-way race on the Democratic ballot for justice of the peace for District 4 resulted in no candidate receiving the majority vote.

Incumbant Douglas Wayland received 38 percent of the vote (108 votes), while Heath Davis received 40 percent (115 votes). Rose Ehrhardt was the third candidate in the race receiving 22 percent of the vote.

Wheeless to serve as chair
of WBC education program

Charlotte Wheeless of Powhatan has been tapped to serve as chair of the Williams Teacher Education Program (WTEP) at Williams Baptist College.

Wheeless, a WBC graduate who has taught at the college since 2009, will assume her new duties this summer.

"WBC is the place I learned what it means to be an accomplished teacher," she said. "I am passionate about the impact the Williams Teacher Education Program has to educate not only great teachers but leaders in the field of education."
