Pictures of the Past

Several are seen crossing the Black River on this free ferry at the junction of Black and Spring Rivers, just east of Black Rock. Governor Carl Bailey's signature is on the State Highway Department sign, placing this photograph between 1937 and 1941. This same ferry boat was later used at Powhatan to provide free service across Black River as an alternative to the toll swinging bridge. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
