Cats beat Brookland, Nettleton,

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2016 baseball season last week with three games at Nettleton's Raider Field in Jonesboro.
The Bobcats defeated the Brookland Bearcats 8-3 on March 2.
The game was tied 3-3 until Walnut Ridge scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Bobcats added three runs in the fifth inning.
Offensively for Walnut Ridge, Will Weir went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Drake Smelser added two doubles, and Luke Wall had two RBIs.
Weir pitched a complete game, allowing three runs and recording four strikeouts.
Walnut Ridge defeated Nettleton 11-4 on Thursday.
Preston Aaron went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Bobcats, while Michael Bounds with 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Cade Burris and Smelser each added two hits.
Drake Smith started on the mound and allowed three runs, with three strikeouts in four innings of work to earn the win. Wall pitched the final three innings, allowing one run and striking out five batters.
Also on Thursday, the Valley View Blazers edged Walnut Ridge 8-6 to hand the Bobcats their first loss of the season.
The Blazers jumped on Walnut Ridge early, with five runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bobcats answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Valley View added a run in the third inning, only to see the Cats plate two runs in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 6-5. The Blazers stretched the lead to 8-5 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Walnut Ridge responded with a single run in the sixth inning, but could get no closer.
The Walnut Ridge junior high baseball team defeated Rector 10-4 on March 1 at Rector.
Nash Gill went 2-for-3, with a single and a double, and drove in two runs. Mari Thomas also batted 2-for-3, and scored a run.
